WE KNOW THAT MOST OUTDOOR GEAR CREATED TO PARTICIPATE IN OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES CAN LEAD TO ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION. INSTEAD OF STOPPING TO PLAY OUTSIDE, WE'VE DECIDED TO MANUFACTURE OUR OWN PRODUCTS IN A MORE ECO-RESPONSIBLE WAY. BORN IN 2005, GREEN GURU GEAR USES OLD OUTDOOR GEAR THAT WOULD OTHERWISE END UP IN LANDFILLS TO CREATE NEW ADVENTURE GEAR. ALL GREEN GURU GEAR STARTED OUT AS SOMETHING ELSE LIKE BIKE TUBES, WETSUITS, AND BILLBOARD MATERIALS. BY KEEPING THESE VALUABLE MATERIALS OUT OF LANDFILLS, WE CAN ADVENTURE WITH A GOOD CONSCIOUS. THE WORD “UPCYCLE” AS IT’S CALLED AT GREEN GURU BEGINS WITH PRODUCTS OBTAINED MOSTLY FROM “RECYCLING STATIONS.” LOCAL BIKE AND OUTDOOR SHOPS OFFER INCENTIVES FOR CUSTOMERS DONATING USED GEAR BEFORE THEY PURCHASE NEW PRODUCTS FROM THERE SHOP. COMPANIES LIKE REI, PATAGONIA, SEA WORLD, AND ORGANIZATIONS LIKE OUTWARD BOUND DONATE THEIR LEFT OVER MATERIALS, DEFECTIVE GEAR, AND OLD BIKE TUBES TO HELP US BUILD GREEN GURU GEAR GEAR. THE DONATED GOODS THEN GO TO THE GREEN GURU WAREHOUSE IN BOULDER WHERE THEY ARE PROCESSED AND SORTED AND ARE THEN SEWN INTO FINISHED PRODUCTS LOCALLY. BY MAKING GREEN GURU GEAR CLOSE TO HOME, WE SUPPORT THE LOCAL ECONOMY WHILE PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. BY DONATING WASTE MATERIALS AND BUYING OUR PRODUCTS, CONSUMERS CAN BE A PART OF THE UPCYCLE PROCESS AND HELP OUR ENVIRONMENT BY REUSING MATERIALS THAT WOULD OTHERWISE END UP IN OUR LANDFILLS. GREEN GURU AIMS AT AFFECTING REAL CHANGE THROUGH GREENER PRACTICES. BY MAKING USE OF USED BIKE INNER TUBES, WETSUITS, AND CLIMBING ROPE, GREEN GURU CLOSES THE LOOP IN THE TRADITIONAL PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE AND LETS OUTDOOR PRODUCTS LIVE A NEW LIFE. YEARS OF DESIGN AND EXPERIMENTATION HAVE ENABLED THE COMPANY TO GROW FROM A SMALL GROUP OF DESIGNS INTO A CATALOG OF PERFORMANCE-ORIENTATED PRODUCTS THAT EXCEED SOCIAL, QUALITY AND SUSTAINABILITY STANDARDS. Description: Anyone can bring their recycling to this facility but must pay in the office, $5.00 per truckload. If you are a City of Houghton resident and you have missed your recycling day, please still enter the office and let them know your address and what you are doing. Please see below for the full listing of acceptable items. HOUGHTON CITY AND HANCOCK CITY RESIDENTS ONLY CURBSIDE RECYCLING MUST BE AT THE CURBSIDE BY 7AM ON YOUR SERVICE DAY. RECYCLING MUST BE IN BINS or TOTES SO CONTENTS CAN BE IDENTIFIED. Please follow the guidelines below. All items must be cleaned of food/organic matter and liquids. Please crush or flatten cardboard and plastic materials where possible. ACCEPTABLE ITEMS UNACCEPTABLE ITEMS Plastics #1 thru #8 Glass – all colors Aluminum cans, tin cans, jar lids and foil products only Corrugated Cardboard ‐ empty/flattened Cereal box type cardboard (remove inner packaging) ‐ empty/flattened Pizza Boxes – clean and empty Soft drink or beer cartons‐empty/flattened White boxboard or card stock Newspapers and inserts Magazines and Catalogs Paper bags or other brown paper‐empty Gray paperboard, boxboard, egg cartons Junk mail Envelopes (labels and windows OK) Telephone books Packing PAPER (NO Tissue) Soft cover computer manuals Dark‐colored accordion files Manila file folders Paperback books Hard cover books NO STYROFOAM OF ANY KIND NO Plastic bags (grocery store bags) NO used paper food products‐plates, cups, etc. NO paper towels, napkins, or tissue paper NO metal spiral or plastic ring bindings NO candy wrappers or chip bags NO wax paper NO plastic transparencies or photographs NO brightly colored (fluorescent) paper NO paper ream wrappers (most have a plastic coating) NO Tyvek (reinforced‐fiber) or padded brown envelopes w/string closure NO dark‐colored hanging files NO carbon paper (carbonless is OK) NO plastic food wrappers or packaging NO gift wrap NO packing peanuts CITY OF HOUGHTON AND CITY OF HANCOCK RESIDENTS WHO MISS THEIR RECYCLING DAY MAY BRING THEIR RECYCLING TO WASTE MANAGEMENT’S DROP‐OFF SITE ON ENTERPRISE DRIVE IN HOUGHTON FOR NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE WITH PROOF OF RESIDENCY.
