Description: Muskegon County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program Muskegon County Department of Public Works offers a free disposal program to Muskegon County residents for unwanted Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) generated in county. Please note that Commercial and Industrial waste is prohibited. The goal of the HHW program is to divert hazardous materials from the landfill in order to protect residents and the environment. Should you possess any of the following materials, the HHW program will dispose of them in a safe and responsible manner. Mercury or mercury containing devices (i.e. Compact Florescent Light bulbs, mercury thermometers or thermostats, etc.) Petroleum products Antifreeze Pesticides Insecticides Herbicides Aerosol cans (containing hazardous materials) Acids (i.e. Batteries, Muriatic Acid)** Bases (i.e. Drain cleaner) Other products with approval **LEAD ACID BATTERIES (i.e. car/boat batteries) are NOT accepted. NOTE: Paint is not accepted. The best way to dispose of paint is to use it up or recycle it! If you’re purchasing paint for a project, consider the area you have to cover and use a paint calculator to ensure you’re not buying too much. If you have leftover (never-frozen) latex paint that you wish to recycle, you can contact Muskegon County Habitat for Humanity ReStore Locations or to Port City Paints/RepcoLite Paints, Inc. or other paint venders that may accepts used paint. As a last resort, if you cannot find a use/recycling outlet for old leftover latex paint, it may be disposed of with your household trash as long as it is dried or solidified by adding kitty litter, (or other drying media) and leaving it open to dry in a well-ventilated area, away from children and animals. Description: One World Center is a Michigan non-profit organization with a mission to inspire and empower ordinary people to take action against worldwide poverty. We have 600 blue clothing collection bins, collecting textiles, shoes and clothing all over the state of Michigan. When you donate your clothes and shoes with us, you help fund One World Center programs that include training and sending volunteers to work at sustainable development projects in Central America and Southern Africa. Our clothing collection bins are found at private businesses, recycling centers and schools. For a bin near you please use the recycling directory or call 313 443 9786 All donations are tax deductible. The clothes and shoes are collected by our drivers and brought to our warehouse in Taylor, MI. From there, they are bailed and packed and sent overseas to markets that really need these recovered resources like e.g. Nicaragua and Tunisia among other places.

Description: The DJ Root Recycling Center has been recycling in our community since 2010. It was formally the Shiawassee County Community Mental Health Recycling Center. The Recycling Center was dedicated to the late DJ Root on April 26, 2013, who helped develop the Recycling Center from the beginning. The DJ Root Recycling Center's main focus is helping individuals with disabilities gain the skills they need to help themselves gain employment within our community. So while you are recycling and helping to reduce items in the landfills, you are also helping people develop and gain new job skills. We are strictly a paper recycling facility, meaning we accept all paper products: Hard cover and paperback books, office paper, newspaper, magazines, paper bags, shredded paper, cardboard, phone books etc. We are unable to accept: plastics, Styrofoam, glass, metals, and electronics. The DJ Root Recycling Center also offers a Paper Shredding Service that is free of charge. If you have old tax records, bank statements, credit card statements or any other confidential material, bring them to our facility to be shredded. Everything you bring that is confidential is kept in a locked bin, in a locked room and that bin is not unlocked until it is time for it to be shredded. Everything you bring will be shredded within 30 days and a letter can be sent to your home or business letting you know that the papers have been destroyed. Everything you drop off at our center is free, there is no charge for any of the services we offer. Although our services are free of charge, in order to have the products we need and to create more jobs, we need support from our community. We know this service has value to you. Please consider a tax-deductible donation in an amount you feel reflects that value after using our service. Your generosity will help make a difference in our community, and on the lives of the people we serve.
