Description: Anyone can bring their recycling to this facility but must pay in the office, $5.00 per truckload. If you are a City of Houghton resident and you have missed your recycling day, please still enter the office and let them know your address and what you are doing. Please see below for the full listing of acceptable items. HOUGHTON CITY AND HANCOCK CITY RESIDENTS ONLY CURBSIDE RECYCLING MUST BE AT THE CURBSIDE BY 7AM ON YOUR SERVICE DAY. RECYCLING MUST BE IN BINS or TOTES SO CONTENTS CAN BE IDENTIFIED. Please follow the guidelines below. All items must be cleaned of food/organic matter and liquids. Please crush or flatten cardboard and plastic materials where possible. Description: The mission of the Kent County Department of Public Works is to foster collaborative and innovative solutions that deliver value to our stakeholders by managing discarded materials to conserve natural resources and promote a healthy, vibrant and sustainable community. Kent County’s Recycling and Education Center serves as the primary materials recovery facility for residential recyclables generated in homes throughout West Michigan. A materials recovery facility, or MRF (murf), is a processing facility where recycling from curbside bins and drop-off recycling centers is sorted and prepared to be sold to processors and end-users. Nearly 58 million pounds of recyclables were delivered to the facility in 2017. These materials were put back into our economy as feedstock for new products like cereal boxes, glass bottles, toys, packaging, clothing, park benches and more.
